I wanted these horses and riders to stand outĀ so I removed the color from the background. I like the effect in this instance.

Horses On A Beach
In late October I attended Morro Photo Exposition in Morro Bay, California. It was a weekend of classes, lectures on different aspects of photography, and, most enjoyable of all, an opportunity to shoot in a spectacular location. One of the organized events was the chance to photograph several riders and horses on the Morro Bay beach at sunset. Over the next several days I will post images from that shoot.
Two riders used English style gear and two used American Western gear. These riders are using English gear.

Future Cutting Horses
Cutting horses are trained to keep a single cow from returning to the herd after the horse and rider have separated it out. In competitions, both horse and rider are judged on their ability to separate a single cow and keep it away from the herd for a short period of time. Cutting horses are athletic animals.

Wild Mustang at Redwings Sanctuary
This is a photograph of a wild mustang at Redwings Horse Sanctuary in Lockwood, South Monterey County, California. Redwings rescues abused or neglected horses and offers some a permanent sanctuary. Redwings ranch is 167 acres and providesĀ permanent shelter for about 90 horses. This horse is one of a group of wild mustangs from Nevada originally slated for slaughter. This horse has the shaggy mane characteristic of many mustangs. With one eye covered, it makes an interesting portrait. Taken with a telephoto lens, 1/180th of a second at f/ 5.6.
