A Look Back—Tufa Lens Flare

Photograph of the sun rising behind tufa columns at Mono Lake, CaliforniaI had overlooked this Mono Lake shot. I have never used a star filter to create an effect like this, but shooting directly into the sun created this lens flare. October, 2008.

A Look Back—Sailboat And Mist

Photograph of a sailboat on a quiet lake in Kings Canyon National Park, CaliforniaOn an early morning run around Hume Lake in Kings Canyon National Park, I saw the mist rising around the sailboat and knew I had to come back before the light changed. I sprinted back for the camera and then back again to the lake. A lot of work, but worth it!

Zephyr Point–Lake Tahoe 2

Photograph of sunrise over Lake Tahoe from Zephyr Point, NevadaThe Sierra Nevada mountains, as well as all of California, are in the grip of a relentless drought. That meant very cold temperatures but no snow or rain. The snow on the ground is left from a single storm in November. Even though there were no clouds, the lake reflected a little color from the rising sun.
