New Mexico—Ghost Ranch

The Ghost Ranch has a colorful history and is, perhaps, best known by its association with the artist Georgia O’Keeffe who lived there at one time and found inspiration for many of her paintings. Today it is owned by the Presbyterian Church USA and is operated as a retreat center. It is open to the public.

Red Rock Canyon 2013–Mud Walls

The flat, mid-day light faded the colors of the rock walls but I liked the patterns of erosion. I desaturated the color levels by 75% for this washed out look.

Death Valley 2013–Artists Palette

The browns, blacks, reds yellows and intermediate shades are caused by iron oxides. Purple hues are due to magnesium. The green colors may be caused by copper or the breakdown of mica.

Death Valley 2013–Golden Canyon

Photograph of Golden Canyon, Death Valley National ParkThe yellow rocks of Golden Canyon are the tilted and folded beds of sediment from ancient lakes; they have been uplifted and carved by water within the last few million years. In late afternoon light the walls of the canyon seem to glow.
