Butchart Gardens–The Sunken Garden 2

Photograph of the Sunken Garden at the Butchart Gardens, British Columbia, CanadaWhen the limestone quarry was exhausted, Mrs. Butchart began the process of transforming a scarred landscape into the Sunken Garden. Her vision of what a devastated landscape could be is very inspiring. I usually prefer the wild beauty of nature but these gardens are breath-taking. Some 900 varieties of over a million bedding plants provide continual bloom from March to October.

Butchart Gardens–The Sunken Garden

Photograph of the Sunken Garden at the Butchart Gardens, British Columbia, CanadaWe recently visited the Butchart Gardens near Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. The gardens are justifiably world-famous. They are a wonder of color, variety and harmony. In 2004 the gardens were designated a National Historic Site of Canada. The 5 different gardens cover 55 acres, much of which is the site of a limestone quarry that supplied Mr. Butchart’s cement business.
