Ian Ross was the Butchart’s grandson. He created this fountain for the lower reservoir of the Sunken Garden. It was installed in 1964 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the gardens.

When the limestone quarry was exhausted, Mrs. Butchart began the process of transforming a scarred landscape into the Sunken Garden. Her vision of what a devastated landscape could be is very inspiring. I usually prefer the wild beauty of nature but these gardens are breath-taking. Some 900 varieties of over a million bedding plants provide continual bloom from March to October.

We recently visited the Butchart Gardens near Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. The gardens are justifiably world-famous. They are a wonder of color, variety and harmony. In 2004 the gardens were designated a National Historic Site of Canada. The 5 different gardens cover 55 acres, much of which is the site of a limestone quarry that supplied Mr. Butchart’s cement business.
