I had been shooting sea otters near the Moss Landing visitor’s dock when this bird swam into the scene. I captured a single shot and paid no more attention to it. It was only later, as I reviewed the day’s images that I noticed the unusual orange-red colored eye.

Although they are a nuisance, sea lions are protected marine mammals and extreme measures can’t be used to drive them away. The earlier posts of sea lions made them seem rather benign. These teeth are a reminder that they are wild creatures and can be very vicious.

Although the sea lions fight and quarrel and drive each other off the dock, occasionally they seem to show each other affection. These two seem to enjoy each other’s company. December, 2008.
