New Mexico—Ghost Ranch

Photograph of an old cabin and redrock cliffs at Ghost Ranch near Albiquí, New MexicoAn old cabin along the entrance road to Ghost Ranch, a retreat center near Albiquí, New Mexico. The Ghost Ranch has a colorful history and is, perhaps, best known by its association with the artist Georgia O’Keeffe who lived there at one time and found inspiration for many of her paintings. Today it is owned by the Presbyterian Church USA and is operated as a retreat center. It is open to the public.

Photograph of eroded canyon walls at Red Rock Canyon State Park, CaliforniaWe stopped at Red Rock Canyon State Park on the way home from Death Valley. The flat, mid-day light faded the colors of the rock walls but I liked the patterns of erosion. I desaturated the color levels by 75% for this washed out look.

The browns, blacks, reds yellows and intermediate shades are caused by iron oxides. Purple hues are due to magnesium. The green colors may be caused by copper or the breakdown of mica.
