Flying Mane

Photograph of horse and rider on a beach at Morro Bay, CaliforniaThis is another example of a desaturated background. The horse and rider in color clearly separates them from the background. Separation is also helped by having the background out of focus, although there is enough detail to see that it is a beach with waves in the background.

Horses In Motion

Photograph of horses and riders on a beach at Morro Bay, CaliforniaI wanted these horses and riders to stand out  so I removed the color from the background. I like the effect in this instance.

Yellow Sunset

Photograph of horse and rider on a beach at Morro Bay, CaliforniaI gave this image a less extreme color temperature boost. I also reduced the contrast to allow a little detail to show through the silhouette.

Orange Sunset

Photograph of horse and rider on a beach at Morro Bay, CaliforniaI gave this silhouette a burnt orange tone to suggest sunset colors. I gave this an extreme color temperature boost to overcome the cold blue and gray tones of the overcast sky.

Horse And Rider At Sunset

Photograph of horse and rider on a beach at Morro Bay, CaliforniaPhotographing the horses on the wet sand with the sun low on the horizon created a shadow reflection. I was interested in trying to capture the reflection and a silhouette of the horse and rider. Although it was sunset, the sky was overcast and gray. I boosted the orange and red colors to increase the warmth of the image.

Looking Out To Sea

Photograph of horses and riders on a beach at Morro Bay, CaliforniaThese two riders for the Morro Photo Expo were using American Western gear. I softened the details and added a saturated glow to give the image a dreamy feel.

Horses On A Beach

Photograph of horses and riders on a beach at Morro Bay, CaliforniaIn late October I attended Morro Photo Exposition in Morro Bay, California. It was a weekend of classes, lectures on different aspects of photography, and, most enjoyable of all, an opportunity to shoot in a spectacular location. One of the organized events was the chance to photograph several riders and horses on the Morro Bay beach at sunset. Over the next several days I will post images from that shoot.

Two riders used English style gear and two used American Western gear. These riders are using English gear.

Happy New Year From Gary Williams Photography!

Sunrise at San Juan Bautista MissionThe image today is appropriate for the season and the new year. It was discovered a few years ago that on the morning of the Winter Solstice, the rising sun shines though a window of the San Juan Bautista Mission and directly illuminates the tabernacle of the altar. I shot this image at the Mission at the Winter Solstice of 2007. I set my tripod up near the front altar and shot down the center aisle directly into the sun, f11 for 1.3 seconds.
(This image is a repeat of my first post from January 1, 2010. Today begins the second year of my photo blog. Last year I posted 120 images.)

May 2011 be full of light for you. Gary Williams
