Returning from Washington and Oregon from a photo and camping trip, I saw Mt. Shasta in the distance. This was taken from a highway overpass on Interstate 5 in northern California. I realized that the trip had been about volcanos; I had photographed Mt. Hood, Mount Rainier, Mt. St. Helens, and, now, Mt. Shasta. Very satisfying!

Road Trip–Shepperd’s Dell
This is one of the smaller and less well known falls in the Columbia River Gorge. In fact, I had driven by this several times over the years without seeing it. It is quite lovely.

Road Trip–Multonomah Falls
My trip took me from central Oregon to Portland along the Columbia River. Multonomah Falls are the best known of the Columbia River Gorge waterfalls. There was less water in the falls in October of a dry year, but still they are beautiful.

A final look at one of the cliffs at Red Rock. This was taken just before the sun began to strike the cliffs. When the sun shines directly on the cliffs, texture and detail get lost in the bright light.

Red Rock Canyon State Park is a very nice place to camp. Campsites are well separated and there are many trails for hiking. Plenty of opportunities for solitude and reflection. It can be very hot in the summer, though, and is almost always windy.

Red Rock Canyon State Park is at the southern tip of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. It is a relatively small area, about 3 miles by three miles, but the distinctive formations have been a landmark for many years.

Favorite Images From 2011–Slough Pond
An absolutely still duck pond off of Highway 1 near Moss Landing, California. I was shooting landscapes while my companions were shooting ducks. The area is private property but is part of the greater Elkhorn Slough drainage area. October, 2011.
