A closer look at one of the adobe buildings. In earlier times, pueblo adobes did not have doors; access to the building was through the roof. Ladders could be pulled up for safety. Ladders are still common, but most adobes have doors and windows, and most are painted blue. I was told that blue wards off malignant spirits.

A storm began to blow in from the Sangre de Cristo mountains, pushing dark dramatic clouds down over the Pueblo. The buildings and this tree were still in the sunshine. The dogs didn’t seem to be affected by the weather.

New Mexico–Taos Indian Pueblo
The Taos Pueblo has been continuously inhabited for over 1000 years, the oldest such community in the United States. The multi-storied adobe complex was built between 1000 and 1450 AD. The pueblo is a World Heritage Site.
