Favorite Images From 2011–Dog On The Beach

Photograph of a dog in front of a large wave at Moss Landing Beach, CaliforniaBefore 2012 fades away, I thought I would look back to a few personal favorite images from 2011 that I haven’t posted here already. 2011 was a productive and prolific year. I added 11,897 images to my catalog. Many came from my trip to Alaska and Canada, and many were bracketed exposures, multiple exposures of the same scene taken at different shutter speeds. I added another large number to separate catalogs for clients or specific assignments. The posts that follow are from my personal catalog and the only criteria they meet is that I like them.

This was taken in January, 2011, at Moss Landing Beach, California.

Moss Landing Wildlife–Sea Lions 4

Photograph of sea lion swimming in Moss Landing HarborAlthough they are a nuisance, sea lions are protected marine mammals and extreme measures can’t be used to drive them away. The earlier posts of sea lions made them seem rather benign. These teeth are a reminder that they are wild creatures and can be very vicious.

Moss Landing Wildlife–Sea Lions 3

Photograph of two sea lions on the visitors dock in Moss Landing HarborAlthough the sea lions fight and quarrel and drive each other off the dock, occasionally they seem to show each other affection. These two seem to enjoy each other’s company. December, 2008.

Moss Landing Wildlife–Sea Lions

Photograph of sleeping sea lions on the visitors dock in Moss Landing HarborMoss Landing installed an expensive visitor’s dock in 2007. Almost immediately, it was taken over by hundreds of sea lions. The dock is no longer available for visitors since the sea lions show no interest in leaving. The sea lions spend most of the time on the dock sleeping or quarreling with each other. They sleep stacked on top of each other like puppies.

California Waves — Dog in Surf

Photograph of a dog running in the surf at Moss Landing, CaliforniaThis has been a popular print at Art shows. I am always asked if this is my dog. It would make a better story, perhaps, if it was, but it isn’t my dog. I saw it trotting through the edge of the surf and managed a quick shot before it was gone. Taken at Moss Landing Beach, January 2005.

Silhouette On The Beach

Photograph of horse and rider on a beach at Morro Bay, CaliforniaThis is the final image in this series of horses and riders on the beach. I allowed just a touch of detail to show in the silhouette. I wanted the rider to stand out against the sky, so I faded the top background away to white. Note the surfer in the background.

Horse, Rider, Silhouette And Echo

Photograph of horse and rider on a beach at Morro Bay, CaliforniaAnother black and white silhouette from Morro Bay, California. The shape and direction of the horse’s head is echoed by the rock off shore.

Horse And Rider Silhouette

Photograph of horse and rider on a beach at Morro Bay, CaliforniaThe final three images in this series of Morro Bay horse and rider shots are black and white silhouettes. I increased the contrast to make the silhouette of the horse and rider as black as possible. It was a challenge to get a good shot between the two rocks off shore so the rider is visible against a lighter background. It was a further challenge to get a shot with all four of the horse’s hooves off the ground.

Flying Mane

Photograph of horse and rider on a beach at Morro Bay, CaliforniaThis is another example of a desaturated background. The horse and rider in color clearly separates them from the background. Separation is also helped by having the background out of focus, although there is enough detail to see that it is a beach with waves in the background.
