Photograph of lupine flowers near Big Sur, CaliforniaTaken along the Nacimiento-Ferguson road that connects Highway 1 south of Big Sur to inland highways. It is sometimes the only connection for Big Sur residents when Highway 1 is blocked by mudslides. A beautiful drive, but not for the faint of heart. April 15, 2009.

Photograph of The Painted Hills, one of the three units of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, near Mitchell, OregonThe colors of the Painted Hills change through the day as the light changes. The colors are particularly rich at sunset, but, alas, these photos were taken in the harsh light of mid-day. I could find no camping nearby because hunting season was just underway. This looks back toward Monterey County and the Salinas Valley;  taken in March, 2011, when winter rains had turned the hills green. It is said that the bandit Joaquin Murrieta robbed stages on this road in the 1850’s.
