Favorite Images From 2011–Crepuscular Rays

Photograph of a crepuscular light ray over the Pacific Ocean at Asilomar beach, CaliforniaOften called God’s rays, crepuscular rays stream through gaps in the clouds as columns of light contrasting with a darker background. They occur most frequently around dusk or dawn when contrasts are most apparent. Crepuscular is the Latin word for twilight.

This was taken in March, 2011, at Asilomar Beach, California.

California Waves — Light Rays

The phenomenon lasted about 5 minutes before the clouds closed together. Taken March, 26, 2011.

Anza-Borrego State Park–Sunset Light Rays

Sometimes called God Rays, they seem to radiate from a single point and often stream through gaps in clouds.

Cook Inlet

Landscape, Clouds, Light Rays, AlaskaThe Cook Inlet stretches about 180 miles from Anchorage south to the Gulf of Alaska. The Inlet provides navigable access for Anchorage and Homer. This image was captured in early September, 2006. Dark clouds alternated with patches of sun to create this dramatic scene.
