View From Steptoe Butte

Photographs of fields in the Palouse region of Washington StateSteptoe Butte is is a peak that rises approximately 1,000 feet above the hills of the Palouse region. It offers wonderful views in every direction of the hills planted in wheat and other crops. The hills and hollows are dramatic when lighted from the side by the rising or setting sun.

The Palouse Region

Photographs of fields in the Palouse region of Washington State
I recently spent several days in eastern Washington, participating in a photography workshop with Scott Bourne and Gary Hamburgh. The area is part of a larger region known as the Palouse, a wheat-growing region characterized by numerous hills, humps and hollows. Crops follow the contours of the hills and create a compelling variety of textures and patterns for the photographer.

Grapevines and Sierra Snow

Photograph of a grape vineyard and the Sierra Nevada mountains near Fresno, CaliforniaThis shot is from Easton, California, a small farming community a few miles southwest of Fresno. The Sierras are not often visible from the San Joaquin Valley because of air pollution. The snow covered peaks were beautiful on an early March morning in 2006. I used a telephoto lens to bring the mountains in the distance much closer to the vineyard in the foreground.
