Culp Valley is only 9 miles from the Palm Canyon campground but it is 3000 feet higher in elevation. Cactus and Mojave yucca are sprinkled among the tilted slabs and rounded granite boulders. The wind was steady, cold and fierce in February.

This is from the first portion of the Palm Oasis trail in Palm Canyon, looking back toward the valley floor. The large clump of red flowers is the Chuparosa plant, and the tall plant in the backgound is the Ocotillo.

Ground water erosion of cooled magma created these land forms in Joshua Tree National Park. The rounded forms seem to take on a human shape. This was taken early morning at the Jumbo Rocks campground. Converted to black and white with Silver Efex Pro.

A late February trip to southern California included a stop at Joshua Tree National Park. The Jumbo Rocks campground is at 4400 feet elevation and was very cold at sunrise. The Mojave Yucca is sometimes called Spanish Dagger.
