A solo camping trip from California to Oregon and Washington. Camping season was almost over in this area of Oregon. I camped in a campground the last night it was open in October, 2007. It was extremely cold, but the compensation was an early morning view of Mt. Hood.

A Look Back—Dramatic Clouds Over Fremont Peak
A winter storm brought dramatic clouds to the area in January of 2007. I found the nearest high point, Manzanita Park, to capture as much of the sky as possible. The highest peak in the distance is Fremont Peak. It was the first place in California where the American flag was raised.

Hot in the summer and freezing in the winter, living in Bodie must have been a challenge. Still, this was a home for a family at one time. Bodie is above the timber line and all wood for construction and heat had to be transported.

Many of the houses in Bodie still have plates on the kitchen tables. It seems as though everyone left at once, though I’m sure that wasn’t the case.

A Look Back—Bodie Methodist Church
This is one of two churches in Bodie, the abandoned mining town. It was built in 1882 and the last services were held in 1932. There were two churches and sixty-five saloons in town.

A Look Back—Bodie Mining Buildings
My first trip ever to the ghost town of Bodie coincided with the first snow of the season. Bodie is almost 8400 feet in elevation and I worried I might get snowed in, but the snow added drama to the scene of the mining buildings.

So often the Sierras in summer are dry and dusty. In July of 2006, there was enough moisture for these delicate flowers to thrive. Taken in Kings Canyon National Park in the central Sierra Nevada.
