kachemak Bay is to the southwest side of the Kenai Peninsula and is part of the larger Cook Inlet in Alaska. Low tide exposed the many rocks and gravel near the beach.

Often called God’s rays, crepuscular rays stream through gaps in the clouds as columns of light contrasting with a darker background. They occur most frequently around dusk or dawn when contrasts are most apparent. Crepuscular is the Latin word for twilight.

This was taken in March, 2011, at Asilomar Beach, California.

This is from the Old Stage Road that connects Salinas and San Juan Bautista, California. This looks back toward Monterey County and the Salinas Valley; taken in March, 2011, when winter rains had turned the hills green. It is said that the bandit Joaquin Murrieta robbed stages on this road in the 1850’s.

This shot has five layers from the dark shore through the top sky. The stillness of the bird silhouettes contrasts with the implied motion of the waves. December 15, 2011.

The shadows were deepening and the sky briefly filled with warm yellows and oranges as the sun set. I liked the silhouette of the lone bird against the sky. December 15, 2011.

Canada and Alaska 2011– Homer Spit

The Homer Spit juts five miles out into the Kachemak Bay. There are many shops, restaurants, fishing boats and colorful residents along the spit. It is a main focus for tourism in Homer.

A variety of textures and shadows and reflections also made this a candidate for black and white.

The dark clouds over the bay contrasted with the snow on the shoulders of the mountains across the bay. The extreme contrasts made this a good candidate for black and white. Homer, Alaska, 2011.
