The earlier posts of sea lions made them seem rather benign. These teeth are a reminder that they are wild creatures and can be very vicious.

These two seem to enjoy each other’s company. December, 2008.

Almost immediately, it was taken over by hundreds of sea lions. The dock is no longer available for visitors since the sea lions show no interest in leaving. The sea lions spend most of the time on the dock sleeping or quarreling with each other. They sleep stacked on top of each other like puppies.

I am always asked if this is my dog. It would make a better story, perhaps, if it was, but it isn’t my dog. I saw it trotting through the edge of the surf and managed a quick shot before it was gone. Taken at Moss Landing Beach, January 2005.

I allowed just a touch of detail to show in the silhouette. I wanted the rider to stand out against the sky, so I faded the top background away to white. Note the surfer in the background.

The shape and direction of the horse’s head is echoed by the rock off shore.

I increased the contrast to make the silhouette of the horse and rider as black as possible. It was a challenge to get a good shot between the two rocks off shore so the rider is visible against a lighter background. It was a further challenge to get a shot with all four of the horse’s hooves off the ground.

The horse and rider in color clearly separates them from the background. Separation is also helped by having the background out of focus, although there is enough detail to see that it is a beach with waves in the background.
